I arrived at the Rolling Stone at 19.44, people were already inside. As I got
in, I left my backpack at the wardrobe and checked the T-shirt stand, but I
decided I could buy one after the show (wrong decision ), and I went into the
venue, which was way less crowded than I expected - when I saw Serj in April,
the Alcatraz was packed up to the ceiling.
Anyway, at 20 the opening band, Belladonna from Rome, began to play. 3 girls
and 2 guys (guitar and drums), 3 very good songs imo, the rest was decent,
though the singer sang all the songs in the same way.
After they packed their stuff, we waited for half an hour while instruments
were being tuned etc. More people arrived but still it was comfortable enough to
breathe, in fact they were all very quiet. At 21 SOB came on stage and we all
screamed. They started with Serious and everybody under the stage jumped and
sang along (a guy hit me on my jaw with his shoulder and this was the only time
I got hurt ) - then came Exploding/Reloading and Stoner Hate. When the
song ended Daron, hidden behind his usual hat/aviators/beard, said "Mamma mia",
pleased, even surprised maybe, by our reaction.
Then I don't remember the exact setlist, however they did play every track of
the album, each one welcomed with screams of joy and clapping (Enemy especially
).
I think Daron took off hat and aviators during Kill Each Other, and started
giving us his famous crazy looks. Halfway of the gig, he sang Iggy Pop's China
Girl, and then I heard the beginning of Babylon!! I was so afraid that they
wouldn't play it! And it was perfect, although we sang it so loud that I could
barely heard Daron's voice.
He didn't speak between songs, just before Cute Machines he said "Thank
you very much, this is the first time that Scars on Broadway play in Italy, and
you are my cute machines, that I love".
They also played Whoring Streets with the long intro and ended with They Say,
while we were jumping and raising our middle fingers
They ended the show with John, Daron and Franky coming to the barriers,
holding hands, throwing picks (a guy at my left got Daron's, and one behind me
got his Gatorade bottle) and drumsticks, then left the stage.
We waited there for a while, then the security guys told us to go upstairs if
we wanted to meet them. Some of us did it, we were 30 or something, and after
another 20/30 minutes standing in front of a doorway, John popped behind us,
followed by the other band members. I got my ticket and my CD signed by John,
Daron and Dominic (I couldn't get to Franky and Danny cuz we were told to move),
and took pics with them -
I was so excited that my brains blacked out and all I was able to say
was thanking Daron for playing Babylon, to which he answered "In fact, it's
the first time we play it live" I'm sure that in that moment my pupils were
heart-shaped I wanted to hug him but then I didn't dare They were
all very nice and kind, and laughed at our jokes, like for example a guy asked
John to say "porco Dio" (most common Italian blasphemy), he did and asked what
it meant, and after he said something like "Why do you always want me to say
something dirty?"
Then we had to go, it wasn't even 23 (11 pm), and the venue was already
closing and I couldn't buy my T-shirt. Oh well, next time it'll be better. And
longer I hope.
I heard that Danny said that he'll leave Scars after this tour, or
something like that... I just heard a guy behind me (while I was waiting to get
my stuff signed by Daron) telling his friend what apparently Danny himself told
him - I too hope it's not true cuz the band is working great.
Bits from the Venue
-The venue held a contest "Meet & Greet SOB", whose winners met them in the
backstage, but then they came out to talk and sign and having pictures
taken...and we were standing on one side and John came from the other, like,
"hey, we're here"
-Daron is becoming more confident with his singing I believe, he never went
out of tune, so I guess Babylon will be performed regularly.
Another good thing of this concert was that people never asked for System songs
like it happened at Serj's gig. Maybe they just got used to the fact that the
guys are not "X, Y, Z from System Of A Down", but two (or three with Achozen)
different and new projects.
- A guy actually asked John "what about System?" and he did a face like
ARRRGHHHH!
Absolutely fucking great evening. One of the best gigs I've ever seen.
