While working, I had a customer come in and I asked him where he was from, he said "Iran".
Immediately the lyrics behind Babylon popped into my head, "slept on roof tops in the summer time". Then I remembered reading an interview with Daron and how he stated that the lyrics came from when he was a boy in the middle east. When the weather was too hot, they would go out onto the roof tops and sleep there to get away from the heat within the house.
Thinking of that, I brought it up and man this guy clicked with it immediately. He began talking about how they would poor water on the roofs because they lacked air conditioning and then once it dried a little bit they'd go on top and sleep on wooden beds. It was very common thing he said and one that he really remembers from when he was younger.
It was a really awesome and insignificantly significant conversation. Then I thought back to Serj's point on how we're all connected. From a simple sentence in one of Scar's songs I was able to relate to an older man with no relation to me.
Just a pretty cool feeling to be honest, I cannot wait for November 4th. |

.
That's why I said the middle east, since some of countries in the middle east have similar infrastructure and lifestyles. Besides man, that really wasn't the point behind my message. |

That is cool, that reminded me of this time I went out to eat and our waiter was from Iran. We just started talking about his country and so much other things. I asked him what his last name was and he said it was Malakar, and right when he said "Mal-" I was like "OMG HE COULD BE RELATED TO DARON"... but I was wrong, because my dad asked if he knew of System of a Down and he said no |

I didnt get your point I guess then
Iran and Iraq are different, although both are located in far west Asia, but the two of huge differences for example, Iraqis speak arabic while iran speaks persian , most of Iran are shiaae muslims while iraqs are half sunni and so on.. common influcnces ofcourse do exist though |

Daron said it clearly, that song is about IRAQ not IRAN. Daron's family original were in Iraq (they are armenians not iraqis, moved there after 1915 genocide)
you can hear daron's talking about it, voice interview, download it here: http://www.soadfans.com/module-Download ... id-313.htm
lol pissy, calm down he said the man was from iran and that daron was from the middle east. Stop acting so elitist about Daron, you don't even know him so calm down zak. |

I am from Iran and I have heard from my grandpa the story of sleeping on roof in summers, though most regions in Iran have cold winters cold so you cannot spend all your time on the roof :p
I don't know where is Daron from, Iraq or Iran but that does not matter in my opinion, Iraq used to be a part of Persian(Iran), but who cares! you gotta see be beyond those empty walls |

Nice story. I love that part too in the song. I already knew the fact, that ppl in the middle east used to sleep on their roofs in the summer time. I think I saw that in some documentary or something. That's why they got these flat roofs. It's a part of the house aswell, just like we are used to a cellar. In these regions the sun heats the ground up all day. The calk white houses release the heat faster, than the ground, so they don't sleep downstairs. I think they do it both in Iran, Afghanistan and Irak. All those countries. A girl from my school once did an exchange trip to Mali (Africa) They slept in tents on the roof too.
that's about it. |
