Yesterday afternoon I met up with the two ladies who had won the Scar Your City competition for Amsterdam, allowing them backstage passes and that they were willing to share with me. We were there around 5:30pm and no-one was lining up yet, so we went for a little bit to eat. As we walked out of the street, we saw Franky walking in, so we said hi to him and already had a pic taken. I also asked him if the new tat he had gotten in Berlin last week was healing well and he showed us.
About an hour later we walked back to the venue and only found 6 kids waiting in line. I was very surprised about that, because last year when Serj played that very same venue lots of people were already queueing up around the same time. It definitely wasn't sold out and the balconies weren't opened for the general public.
We were allowed to go inside at 7:30 and I first got myself a beautiful hoody. They are rather expensive (€50,-) but very good quality, so imo they're worth it. Right after we got into the hall and were able to get to the front row.
Our support act was local band The Wrong Jeremies. Technically they were pretty good, and I liked the drums in their songs (think that may have the reason why Daron & John picked them), but overall the songs didn't really tickle me and their stage presentation needs a little improvement too. However, I don't know how long they've been playing, so this might just be a beginner's thing. We met them later on and they are nice friendly guys, which is always a plus imo.
Around 9:30 Scars took to the stage and I have no idea on the order of the songs, just that they played them quickly after each other. Daron's voice sounded good, no signs of his throat infection anymore (or so it appeared), but they didn't do Babylon. We did get the instrumental Scars tune and an almost full China Girl cover.
It was great being able to see Daron's eyes move from side to side, and grow really big, as well as seeing his weird finger movements and his cute dancing. To me, Franky was the real showman with his 'poser' rock poses (I say this in the most positive meaning of the word), esp. when he stood over the security guy. And during Cute Machines he grabbed a hand full of his own 'cute machines'.
Sometimes Franky would run over to the other side, at which times Dominic would come to our side. The way he shakes his head reminded me of a dog that shakes himself dry after a jump in a lake, in his enthusiasm he also fell on the floor one time, kicking his legs in the air.
Couldn't see John's face (a drumset without cymbals would be weird though..) but I could see his arms & legs, so I looked at that from time to time. Danny was often behind Franky, but when I did see him, he was either singing along to the songs or shaking his beautiful long hair every way possible.
Some 45 mins later the show ended and I was lucky enough to get both John's drumstick and Franky's pick. I'm usually a lousy catcher, so to catch the drumstick already made my day and then Franky put the pick in my hand as well, giving me a wink.
We then headed to the upstairs backstage area, where about 10 lucky winners were gathered together. This was a whole different type of meeting than with the FCC, who we really got to hang out with 3 weeks ago, as opposed to this little informal meet & greet, but I'm very happy that I got the opportunity to meet all of Scars too!
Franky came in first, still sweaty but wearing a different shirt. Talked a little and he signed the promotional poster I had gotten from Sugar a while ago. By then Danny & John had gotten in as well. John was very chatty, smiling, joking and just acting goofy. I stroked his head to feel his (soft!) stubble and I asked him for a hug, which was a big strong bear-hug. Dominic had come in too and I got pics with all the guys, and they all signed the poster.
Then Daron came shuffling in (apparently wearing flipflops or slippers or something, I didn't see them myself), shaking hands with everyone, while saying "Hi, I'm Daron." He seemed really shy, but he was lovely and thanked me for the cd I made him (the same I had given Serj 3 weeks ago; also gave a copy to John). After taking pics with everyone, he disappeared as quickly as he had come in and I realised he hadn't signed my poster yet! I asked Danny if he could please ask Daron to come back, but he suggested he'd take it to Daron to have him sign it, which was just as cool with me.
Also asked Danny if it was true that he would quit Scars after this tour/album, but that's definitely NOT TRUE! I was glad to hear that. =)
After 10-15 mins the meeting was over again and we were asked to leave again. Hamps (who was surprised that I knew who he is) walked us to the elevator and I had my pic taken with him. When we got outside I saw Sako help load the truck and I said hi to him, to which he came over to us. I told him I had seen him sit right by John's side on stage already to which he said "yea, it's been 10 years already." I told him I had read the article from Drum magazine and that it was nice to see him get some recognition. He smiled and thanked me for the kind words, before we had our pic taken as well.
Us ladies also took some pics together before we each left with our chosen way of transport.
Here's pics of my 'swag'
Part of the signed poster. LTR: John, Franky, Danny, Daron (top) & Dominic

I listen to a lot of Radiohead, that genre.
That's pretty mellow.
What's mellower than Radiohead !
