Hey Everyone.

I shared some of this info over at the message boards on systemofadown.com, but figured I should probably hit this site up too.

John has been writing songs with a yet-to-be named new group. Though all members hail originally from Southern California, they have been writing and rehearsing in Las Vegas, where John is currently living.

They have ten songs so far, and plan to start playing shows in Vegas and LA once they are happy with 10-12.

John is playing a huge creative role in writing and structuring and, as far as drumming, is really killing these songs.

I am good friends with the other three guys in the band and have heard the stuff; some of it is really incredible.

I look forward to hearing from anyone else about the project. I'll also try to answer whatever questions I can.

I took a shitty picture with my phone last time I was out there, but I tried to get enough background to put the photo in a believable context.

Note the "MESMERIZE HYPNOTIZE" banner, the assorted framed photos of SOAD below, and the killer Dragon's Lair II arcade console. John is in the lower right hand corner sporting a mohawk.

I'm tickled to death to hear about this. I don't really care who the other musicians are, or if it turns into anything great or not.

I'm just thrilled that the man has an opportunity to play again, and that he can have his own creative input into the project (which I was afraid he wouldn't if he worked with Billy Corgan).

I guess this explains why he's growing back the mohawk!

By John writing songs I think he/she means that he figures out the drum parts which contributes a heck of a lot to the songs. Even Daron said with SOB, not any drummer fit his music and that John brought something special to his music. I started focusing in on the drums in SOAD's music and realized that I probably love SOAD a lot because of the drums. They can really set the tone for a song.

Congrats to John, it's good to see he is keeping himself busy, all that good stuff, lets see how well this band will be, it will be nice to hear a change from Serj and Daron's writing, and whatever RZA and Shavo are writing, mabye John's record will make it to the stores before Shavo's....

seriously now...what if this is all a ploy and system are starting to get a few jamming sessions in again?? john spoke to daron on the phone recently...maybe to discuss it. shavo saw john at the gallery..they might have discussed it. and who knows where serjy boy is??

honestly...it wouldnt surprise me. im usually one of the more pessimistic members on here..but who is the guy who posted the info?? someone who works for velvethammer perhaps....a way to work up the hype machine??

of course i'm probably wrong...but who's to say that the time for them to reunite hasn't come?? if they got rehersing now...you could expect a new album by spring 2010....that will be a 5 year gap, a pretty good hiatus period i reckon?

Thanks! yea, about that system reunion ideas... its nice but lets not put the cart before the horse, jump the gun or count our chickens before the eggs hatch and enjoy the thought of a john based band!
can john play any instruments besides drums? i just had a thought of him shredding on a guitar and slapping a bass, and it was weird to me....

I'm not saying that I wouldn't want soad to come back but we've had zillion things/events when people go like 'oh they're gonna reunite' and nothing happened. That's where I'm at with my optimism/pessimism.

hmm, i would love to share Joel's opinion, but lets not spoil John's side project, i mean its so embarrassing: everytime he gets to make music with 3 other, yet unknown guys, will we think only of Serj, Daron, and Shavarsh? though i do agree that the lack of emphasising "...the 3 other guys who are NOT S/D/Sh..." makes people suspicious, but fellows, its dangerous...we're gonna cry when they announce that the names of the guys are Jack, Peter and Tony (for example)

Hey again everyone! Glad to see all the interest, but I guess when it comes to SOAD fans, I am not suprised.

I guess I should immediately quash any hopes that this post is actually about the long-awaited SOAD reunion. This is very much a NEW band. I will also say that I have every reason to believe that System will one day reunite, but that day does not seem to be on the immediate horizon--at least I hope it's not for my friends' sake!

I should also clarify a couple of things. John is not actually writing all the material, but is helping in arranging songs and writings bridges, breakdowns and those kinds of things. He HAS, however, contributed to the lyrics for a couple of songs (and one is totally a cheesy love song!).

The other members used to be in a more or less unknown (but great!) punk rock band in Southern California, a band John helped off and on with connections and other things. When Daron pulled the plug on Scars they got together and started jamming, which turned into writing. This was a couple of months ago, right after John auditioned for Smashing Pumpkins.

The band is definetly a rock band, but I don't know if you would call them a metal band. I think most hardcore SOAD fans would like it as John's drumming is VERY recognizeable. It is melodic hard rock with hints of punk rock (in the Bad Religion vein) and hints of metal (thanks to John!).

I have heard all 10 songs and they are great.

I would love to answer any other questions you guys might have. I'm so glad I stopped by here!

What is the composition of the group? drumm, singer, guitar, bass? Or the singer plays guitar too? Two guitarists one bass?
Elect the Dead sounds a little like SOAD. Scars on Broadway sounds a little like SOAD. Does sound Johns group a little like SOAD? Smile

Do you think they will record some CD one day? Or this project will be just concert group? I think it will be cool if Johns group will record CD in Serjical Strike or urSession... Smile

If he was still working on it. The gallery was a month ago. Why would he go and tell something to a total stranger? Keep in mind that this is not even now 'official' yet.

HeWhoKnows, can you describe the singer's voice at all? It will be a big part of whether or not I have any interest in the band. Anyone to compare him to, any descriptions, anything at all. Of course I have interest in it musically, it's just that the vocalist often makes it or breaks it for me...

Oh, I don't think there's a chance this will be total crap. John doesn't play crap, and I think he seems to have pretty good taste in music & musicians as a rule.

I just mean that I'm not gonna judge them if they don't "make it big" and get lots of radio play & what-not (like Smashing Pumpkins). I just want John to have a good time, and I really hope to hear it at some point, either on a CD or live (if they ever tour outside of the LA or Vegas areas.)

And to those who think this is a System reunion?

we heard recently that he had grown back the mo-hawk...i cant remember where from....an article somehwere i think? so it isn't fake and it isnt a system reunion. why would the guy use up his own time, politely post something like he has if it was all bullshit and just to be a total prick?? there would be no logic...i know people are twats on the net..but i find it hard to believe.

but when the guy posts again rubbishing any rumours or hopes that it could be a reunion, why would you choose not to believe him?? there's no point in mistrusting the guy when he has gone out of his way to provide us with information.

edit - just as a side note....what idiot changed my update on Scar's wikipedia page?!?!?! i wrote it all out nice and now they've changed it to " break up rumours" instead of "break up of the band". fucking morons....IT'S OVER.

they've used my info then just added the quote from John where he said he misses the band in that crappy email interview.....so come on...i know it must have been one of you guys because we're the only ones sad enough to change it! haha

why should he when they want to remain secret. you cant just say that "system are reuniting but are keeping it secret so that's fine" and then when the same may apply to 3 totally random guys (of which he has given details about) who want to keep it secret you just disgard it as a cover up. it doesn't work like that buddy.

Wow! Again, I'm pretty impressed by all the responses here. I will do my best to answer a couple of the clearer questions.

The band consists of drums, bass, guitar and vocals. The singer does not play an instrument. The only other interesting this about the composition of the group is that the lead guitarist used to be the bass player of their old band and the bassist used to be the rhythm guitarist. I realize this is the same number of bandmates and same instruments as SOAD, but again, I PROMISE, this is new project--John represents the only tie to System.

If the band sounds like System, it is just because of John playing his very unique brand of drums. For example, I think both System and Scars tune their instruments very low, which accounts for some of the similarity of sound (that and Daron singing obviously). Maybe there are different questions about the sound I could try and answer?

If everything goes the way the guys hope, they will both tour and record.

The guys are heading out to Vegas to jam this Saturday. I may be able to tag along and snag an audio clip if the guys let me. I will try. I could also probably get a hold of some lyrics if the board is interested.

As for the secrecy, the guys don't wanna make anything official until it becomes official. They are very excited about the project, but won't announce anything until they have a show date booked.

Just listened to the "demo", and my opinion is that John sounds fantasitc (of course!) and the band definitely has potential. The singer & the melody almost have a little bit of a retro-70's-prog-rock feel to them.

I'm anxious to hear more asap.

Well... like I said it doesn't say anything about John on their Myspace, so it's a possibility that because of something, quite possibly the project mentioned in this thread, he can't play with them.

Or, that could be a newer article, and they may not have updated their Myspace, I don't know.

Sorry if this was already asked but my computers being super slow so I'd rather go through the recent pages but, whats the deal with John's supposedly new band? Is it real, or was the Halloween Jack thing it?

I'm pretty sure the supposed Halloween Jack gigs were just a totally random thing - where John Dolmayan was supposed to sit in for the usual drummer who was on tour with his normal/successful band. But we've had no actual evidence (pics, reviews, vids) that John in fact ever played with them on the dates he was scheduled to.

(Someone, anyone, please feel free to post your "proof" and prove me wrong.) Confused

Anyway, John's other side project that this thread is supposed to be about, well, we've gotten a clip of audio. And we're anxiously awaiting more.
