Try firefox. It's not having any problems playing it. At most you'll have to reload to play the first time. Not sure if it can be hosted..since it's official material? I could be wrong though...

I liked the song. The melodies are great. But, I think it lacks a better/powerful bridge.

I thought his singing was GREAT. But then he said in an interview that he didn't have to write to accustom Serj's voice so he probably found it easier to sing because he didn't have to squeak out notes to try and harmonise.

If that's what you gusy think, what ever. I just found it beyond boring. Daron has an amazing voice, but he doesnt' do anything with it. He has a very low vocal range and just does the same thing over and over, like he's afraid to come out and just let loose. Like at the end of the course, it would have been more dramatic if he had screamed 'end'. And I personally think the music outshined him, he wasn't out there enough to mix with the guitar.

Reality check, people! Scars isn't gonna sound exactly like System, any more than Serj's Elect the Dead does. This is where we find out which sounds/attributes of System's sounds come from which member.

I'm looking forward to hearing the entire album before I make any judgements. But I'm sure I'll love it just like EtD. Just like my children, my SOAD-boyz can do no wrong.

In They say" or just generally? Because I agree he did kinda sing in the same tone throughout it but in past SOAD songs he's screamed and let loose like at the end of Mr. Jack for example.

I'm loving this song, that's my opinion. And it does have an extremely mainstream vibe going on. However, Daron's voice is a bit different. Sure, the way he's singing may sound familiar, but his voice in general is different and you have to keep in mind that this is one song. I think that Daron was aiming for having a well balanced song to release first. And also, why would you give out your best song before the album even came out. This could be a throw away track for all we know. I think that he will save his best song for a video if he does one.
I'm really loving the crazy guitar effects he uses on the "it's all about to end" part. I'm obssesed with that part now xD
But wait for the album or a video that might drop before we know it. For a first song, honestly, I think that this is really, really good. The best will come for those who wait. Daron is only giving us a taste.
I just realized, people are focusing so much on Daron, I almost forgot about John e_e

I think it's a pretty good song. Not necessarily his best, he did use the same sort of tone through it, but I guess it suited it.

I'll probably listen to it a hundred times by tomorrow, I had Serj's songs on repeat for ages every time I got one. :p

Cool. So I'm not the only one who noticed it! The chord progressions in the intro, starting at :14, well not just the chords but the way Daron played them reminded me totally of Holy Mountains.

I love this song! I still think that Daron is at his best when he sings ballads, but "They Say" is a good start - a good opening track, also.

Hmm... first listen right now....

Just want more variation is all. I don't like how he keeps the same pitch through the verses, but that's more of a taste issue. Thought it was a little too short and repetitive. It's great to hear Daron's voice again, I just can't wait for the rest of the album!

Bottom line: I like it, just hope the rest is better.

Is that Daron singing or Casey? Or are they taking turns? Their voices are a lot alike. Can't say that I'm crazy about this tune. It's almost painfully simple. Maybe it will grow on me. The idea of fucking the world sounds pretty painful to me. But then I'm not male. I'm looking forward to hearing the rest of the CD. I'd kind of hoped that the whole CD would be released today, as it's my daughter's birthday today and I'd wanted it to be one of her presents. She likes this little release very much.

I really hope it will be the same as with Elect The Dead. For two days I could not get The Unthinking Majority out of my mind and then, suddenly, there was nothing left, chewed up everything. I though "Well, was that all". But now that I have the whole album I think it's worth listening to it for a longer time.

Now this song is very very very catchy (and easy to play as the musicians here found out). I hope it's not too catchy, I hope it for daron, because I really wish that his album will be great.
In my opinion it's not as good as Serj's music, just judging from this track, of course. But I really hope that this is nothing more than a teaser because normally singles should be representative for the quality of the whole album.

Don't bash me. I love Daron more than anything and his work with SOAD.
But my first thoughts were "what the Hell."
I think this reaction was because the whole thing was just different to me. I expected more electronica because I thought that's what he said he was going to do.
However, does anyone agree that this definitely has remnants of 80's metal in it? It's a bit hard to pick out, but I think I did. To me, "They Say" is like 80's metal mixed with The Dandy Warhols (the latter because of the guitar refrain single notes).
I had HUGE expectations, which was probably not right of me because my friend always says "No expectations, no disappointments" but what can I say? I love the guy and was completely obsessed with SOAD. I believed he could do anything. If he died (knock on wood), I would probably pray to him as my muse to help me become a great musician like he was. Hell I pray to him NOW!

OKAY enough of the paragraphs that sound like I'm degrading his song.
I actually do like the song now. That was just my VERY INITIAL reaction. I've had time to settle down. I love the song, don't worry all Smile

The lyrics are AMAZING to say the least-- that's something I liked from the start. His voice is the best in the world, next to Serj's, but in a different way. I think I did freak out hearing Daron's without Serj and without a lot more sound from the instruments in the background, but I've always loved Daron's voice and it definitely is another reason the song is so great. For once we get to hear Daron's voice not so covered up by other things.
I agree with what someone else said-- this maybe one of the more "mainstream" songs he put out first and that the others would be more intricate. I think that's another reason at first I was shocked-- he stays on the same note for a while, not much variation(I agree with e-ray completely with his post on page 10), not much going on there-- but later I realized that this doesn't matter. It's still great. When I threw out the notions of what I thought the record would sound like (always a bad thing to expect a certain sound) then I fell in love with the song Smile

So yes, this post is me being weird then realizing I'm an idiot haha. I really do love it and still can't wait to hear more. Smile

And seriously, like ALL SOAD songs-- they're addicting to listen to. Once you hear it once or twice, you just want to hear it more and more, and of course SING ALONG! Ahhh... I'm becoming obsessed with this song... ahhh!!! hahaha.... okay, I don't doubt anymore, something in my brain is changing! I think when his song plays.... CRACK fumes emit from our computers and make us love it hahahah

It was a pretty decent song, nothing spectacular though, sounded kind of generic. Can't say it was bad though, and I did like it, very catchy, could have been better though, but I suppose like everyone said, it's probably just a taste of what's to come, so I'm looking forward to the album.

Just had another thought--

Although the song does not have much melodic variance like other songs he has made with SOAD,... he could have also done this on purpose. I mean, an artist has to create a certain emotion(well doesn't have to, but you know what I mean) that sort of match the lyrics... so the one note thing and general tone of the song must mean something...

Now, if someone can figure out exactly why Daron made it the way he did, that would be spectacular. But, like he and Serj have said before, it should not really matter what we think their purpose was, but what it means to us.

Amazing. This is exactly what I wanted and expected from Daron. His voice sounds really close to his "old" voice (Toxicity era) but retains his Hyp/Mez tone as well Razz

My OPINION: the song isn't amazing - it's only good. I expected something different. I listened to the song about 30-40 times and it's slowly becoming boring - lack of some kind of good bridge...All in all, I think that They Say it's a good teaser for an album. The intro is cringe worthy, it sounds like something thrown together and recorded by a teenager in there bedroom..
When the song kicks in it thankfully gets better.

Well, in my opinion his vocal is much better than on Mez/Hyp.
And that song don't have to be on the album, cause just like Daron said, they have about 21 songs, and only 16 of them will be on the CD. The rest is going to be developed variosly, and maybe that is one of these songs. BTW. Main riff is very catchy and has a good sound to Daron's vocal. I expected some kind of this sound and I like it. However, it's not a genious composition though. Can't wait for the whole album.

I remember when i first heard The Unthinking Majority I wasn't all that thrilled with it, but then I heard empty walls and loved that song.

I was waiting for something more suprising musicly. The song is pretty much the same, and that makes it bit boring. Vocals are better than in twin albums, but i´m still not the biggest fan of darons voice. Lyrics are the only thing i really like in this song.

I was reminded instantly of Zero by The Smashing Pumpkins, not so much the vocals, but the tone of the music and the guitar, and the way that it's very simple. Very awesome song though, I'm loving it, listened to it at least thirty times since this afternoon xD I hope the album turns out good... but I was expecting it to be electronic? or maybe industrial, down the line of Nine Inch Nails? ... guess we'll have to wait for the rest of the album, but so far, I'm pretty happy. Didn't think spin off bands got much better than what Serj did, and I hope Daron can compete. So far though, I can say that I'm much happier with this than I was with The Unthinking Majority when it was just released... so yeah.

hahahahaha YOU make me laugh lol lol.
I've heard Serj's voice during the 05-06. There were times Daron outshined Serj. Some people say that "oh, Daron was off" but have you ever thought SERJ was singing out of key...ever?

EDIT: Just so you know, I LOVE Serj's voice, but people really think he has the best voice ever- period- end of story -no -contest. His voice is unique, yes. Best voice I've ever heard? No fucking way, I'm sorry.

You think Serj has a better voice? Cool, it's your opinion. But to laugh at other people and talk like it's holy word that he is better? Ridiculous.

I've always thought Serj's live voice was PATHETIC! I mean, at least for all the shows he's played for his solo album, his voice has been awful. I can't even stand to watch them more than once...it makes me sad. Some even say that in SOAD's last shows, his voice sounded horrible. I didn't really agree then, but I do now. I mean really, it was once powerful, but now he sounds like a sick child. I'm not gonna lie, I wish his voice was what it once was, but it's gone. Sad

As for Daron, his voice has grown by leaps and bounds over the hiatus, I mean, compare the Needles bridge to They Say, it's almost magical. Just as his voice matured from STA to Mez/Hyp, it's matured from Hyp to Scars. He has really worked on his singing, it's completely obvious.

Ah! I know one reason this song is different than other SOAD songs that we're used to-- no bipolarness to it. Interesting.......
Although I'm sure we could name some SOAD songs that don't have bipolarness to it.... shit what's the right word for bipolarness?

I half disagree with person above me about Serj's voice^^
The reason is because in Philadelphia when I saw Serj with Tom Morello and they sang Lazarus together, I got chills because Serj's voice was beautiful. There are some videos of him doing Lazarus on Youtube, but the videos don't give his voice justice. I half agree with you because yeah, his voice was different at Ozzfest a few years ago. I'm thinking maybe it was just the microphone though.

In my opinion, nowadays Serj live isn't so good. His voice has changed a lot. I still love it, but his live performances for example from 2002 are way better than the later ones. His voice now is different. And Daron isn't bad live - I really don't think he sucks. But it's all of course my subjective opinion Wink

Meee too!
I was reading like Five pages back and a post caught my eye.
This is just a teaser, who knows how many songs are going to be on the final album.
This might not even make the cut, or even be one of there singles.
For me Daron has never really disappointed with his Singing and Guitar playing.
^And Neither has Serj! I saw him live a few weeks ago and I though he did a really good Job.
Much better then he did at times with system.

I can honestly say SOAD concerts/Serj Tankian concerts were the happiest moments of my life. Am I pathetic?

The song isn't working for me anymore, it keeps freezing, I think too many people are listening to it or something Sad

Alot of people don't want to admit it, but it's pretty much an unspoken fact that everyone knows: Daron had two distinctive different voices, that of the Toxicity era, and that from the Mezmerize/Hypnotize era. My favorite, like alot of people, is his voice from the Toxicity era.

That being said, They Say portrays probably the closest sound we'll get from a newer song that features the likeness of Daron's old voice, although his newer voice still appears.

In short!: I really love Daron's voice in this new song. This song is a simple song, but it still packs a message. One thing I've always liked about System of a Down is that Daron never made it a point in a song to seperate everything else so he can do a guitar solo, if he ever even did one. If he did one, he made sure it blended into the song, intead of it being something like (riff riff riff riff GUITAR SOLOOOOOO riff riff)

(EDIT) I guess it wasn't really that short, haha. Razz

I feel confident that the whole album is gonna be great. It's up to Shavo's ACHOZEN now to continue the streak!

You are aware, for every video you find of Serj singing well, you can find a video of him singing like he woke up from a coma. I can do the same thing with Daron.

I still think Serj's voice has become alot more naisely than it use to - which I find kinda annoying. It's all a matter of opinion

. Daron has proved all the non believers that he can sing and write. DOnt forget he is the brains of soad. Serj is just the voice of soad.

but that doesnt matter. it matter what makes you happy and for me soad makes me happier than any side projects that they have done or will be adding to.

Great song looking for the whole album i cant wait!

Everyone has good and bad days. That's my two cents. I've seen Serj recently and his voice was spectacular. No one is "on" all the time. We need to give these guys some slack. I like to think of whatever song/whatever place they sang their best is what they really sound like....

Streamlines the odd one out,

I think that this song is very mediocre and a pathetic attempt at music. The thing that upsets me the most is that I know Daron can write powerful music. All of Toxicity is a very good example of his dynamic and interesting work.

Gone are the tempo changes, double time feel, half time feel etc. There is no variety with this song, and Daron's voice sometimes makes my head hurt. The man stays on the same note for most of the song.

And he only used like 6 or so power chords in the whole song. I listened to the song, and proceeded to play it on my acoustic, without even having to question what the hell the tab was. I wonder if he does this so that he can sing and play guitar at the same time. He was never really good at doing that live. Take the BYOB chorus for example. He couldn't play the syncopated part and sing at the same time, so he had to augment the rhythm.

Daron could have used a drum track for John's part. And we all know that John can play the shit outta some drums.

Hopefully, this song is the equivalent to Cigaro in regards to the Hyp/Mez combo. Maybe there are better songs to come. I really hope that the rest of the album does not follow this trend. However, at least I can look forward to Serj's new CD.
