Serj Tankian News

Former System Of A Down vocalist Serj Tankian has been busy with various projects, but his new solo effort is just about done.

"Friends of mine that have heard it say that it reminds them of the times of old before modern civilization and certain things of... I can't really explain it. It's a lot easier for me to talk about other people's music than my own in some ways. It's definitely got a lot of instruments a lot of... The sound is very deep. There's a lot of layers of guitars, pianos, and acoustic guitars. There's a lot going on."

Serj Talks about the performance with Fair to Midland
Serj Tankian News
Posted by Mikke on Friday, May 04, 2007 - 09:36 PM

Serj ft. FTMApart from Rage Against the Machines reunion, one of the most talked about sets at Coachella in 2007 was the up-and-coming Texas band Fair To Midland.

Performing in the afternoon in The Mojave Tent on Sunday April 29th, Fair to Midland easily demonstrated their intricate song writing ability is a perfect mesh with their masterful use of dynamics and a ferocious stage performance that few bands duplicate.
But what better way could the band grab the attention of the masses in the desert than to have Serj Tankian, lead singer for System of a Down, sit in for an improvised version of Fair to Midland's song 'Walls Of Jericho.' Serj caught the band performing a short time ago in Los Angeles and upon seeing Fair to Midland for the first time, Tankian immediately signed the band to his kick start record label, Serjical Strike Records.

Serj to appear with Fair to Midland at Coachella
Serj Tankian News

Serj's appearance has been confirmed:

"Serj Tankian of System of a Down was on the hotLine yesterday and it was great catching up with him! First off, he said he plans to be at Coachella this weekend and will join his band, Fair to Midland, on stage! (They are on his label, Serjical Strike Records, in case you didn't know.) He is psyched about the response, including hardDrive's early support, to the band, who he said he loved the moment he saw them perform live. (Ditto that!)"

Serj Tankian Finishing Up Solo Debut
Serj Tankian News
Posted by Hoffness on Saturday, April 28, 2007 - 09:10 AM

System Of A Down frontman Serj Tankian is planning a fall release for his first solo album, "Elect the Dead," telling Billboard.com it's "a rock record, but it's pretty progressive. It's very wide sounding -- lots of different sounding instruments. The excitement I had making this record was the same excitement I had making the first System record."

Tankian will release the "Elect the Dead" on his own Serjical Strike label but partner with an as-yet-unnamed major label for distribution. He says the album is a "very homemade" project, recorded mostly in his own studio in Los Angeles.

He played most of the instruments himself but did get help from SOAD drummer John Dolmayan and former Primus skin-pounder Bryan "Brain" Mantia, along with Dan Monti on guitar and bass, opera singer Ani Maldjian and some string players.
