“The Simple Life”
Kerrang! Magazine
Words by Tom Bryant
Private man, political activist, and avid kitchen cleaner – Serj Tankian is a rock star unlike any other. Welcome to his world.
The road to Serj Tankian’s house is a long and winding one. A few miles north of the bustle of Los Angeles, high up in the Malibu hills that fringe the Californian coast, the lane to his home passes under shady firs. On the right is a neigbour’s place, in the front garden – a field, really – are a couple of grazing horses, cool under the forest-like expanse of trees that cover the hilly countryside here. Meanwhile, all around, there’s an air of laid-back living, of calm – we’re a long way from the other rock star mansions that crowd Beverly Hills. |

System Of A Down's Serj Tankian Hopes Second Solo LP Doesn't Rock

Serj
is shooting for jazzier, 'more orchestral' sounds; also reveals 'FCC' backing
band, talks Wyclef Jean collaboration.
It's six days until Serj Tankian's inaugural solo debut, Elect the Dead,
hits record stores, and yet, the wild-eyed System of a Down frontman is already
mulling his next album and the direction he wants to take with it. In fact, the
dude's stockpiled about 4,500 songs he's written over the last few years from
which to mine.
"They're not all like [the songs on Elect the Dead]," he said. "They're not all
rock or pop or anything like that. I've got classical music, electronic
compositions, experimental songs, noise, punk, metal — I have a lot of different
types of music because when I have free time, I write music, regardless of what
project I'm working on at the time. I will always have more material than I can
afford to release." |

The Flying Cunts of Chicago
|

A
cold, overcast day in the Chicago area. After finding a kickass parking spot a
block away from the Vic Theatre, at 4:45 PM on October 12, 2007, the nerves
kicked in. I was going to see Serj Tankian, the voice of System of a Down.
Me and my girlfriend ran to the short line forming outside the venue. I’d
estimate it was around 25 people long. Serj propaganda, in the form of posters,
lined the walls outside of The Vic. It was around 50 degrees Fahrenheit, so we
were a bit chilly, as was the rest of the crowd. Waiting in line, a beige tour
bus was parked across the street with a permit on the windshield, reading “Serj
Tankian, October 12.” As we waited, we could hear a faint pounding sound coming
from an alleyway, this pounding was oh-so-rhythmic and oh-so-familiar. In fact,
it was the FCC (Flying Cunts of Chaos) practicing “The Unthinking Majority”.
Although it’s a bad pun, we really were….dying of anticipation. |

I
just got home from Serj's first Elect the Dead concert....Wow....holy
fuck, that was easily the bens tonight of my life.
We stood in line for a good two hours, holding my "SOADFANS.COM" sign, hoping
to grab someone's attention, which A few people noticed and gave some positive
input to. As I entered, they took them and threw them away though .
The show started out with Tom Morrelo's mommy speaking into the mic (didn't
see that one coming lol) and she introduced her son, Tom. Tom gave a speech and
started his list of United States rebel-related songs. After he finished
playing, we waited a gruesome 45 minutes for Serj to appear. as I had
guessed, they started off with The Unthinking Majority (which I must add, is
MUCH better live). The entire show included: |
