Interviews
Posted by darontotallyrocks on Monday, October 24, 2005 - 05:22 PM

Metal Hammer Magazine, got a small interesting article about system:
System of a Down return with their 2nd album 'Hypnotize' on Nov. 22nd, part two of the package that also includes 'Mezmerize' which was unveiled in May. The band also planning UK shows in the 1st part of 2006.

"We're going to be touring non-stop for the rest of the year and we're looking at European shows in the first part of next year" singer Serj Tankian told Hammer.

As Previously reported, the reason for releasing 2 albums was because after recording, the band realized that they had 2 albums worth of great songs that were all connected with each other. Rather than whittle them down, they decided to release them 6 months apart to give fans a chance to absorb the first album fully before they heard the second

SOADFans: Supremely Original And Delightful
Interviews

S-O-A-D. What does that spell? No, it is not a typo, it’s the Supremely Original And Delightful band, System of a Down. Turn on the radio and the timbre of Serj Tankian’s shrill psychotic vocals, Daron Malakian’s erratic harmonies, and the infusion of decidedly non-Western melodies make their music unmistakable. Part of what makes System of a Down unique is their array of influences from which they draw, namely Black Sabbath, Slayer, Jaco Pastorias, The Beatles, Faith No More, Rage Against the Machine and most notably, Armenian, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean Folk Music.

System of a Down keeps fans guessing with album follow-up
Interviews

System of a Down bassist Shavo Odadjian has a few words for listeners who think they know what to expect when the second half of the band's "Mezmerize/Hypnotize" concept album hits stores Nov. 22.

"What to expect from us is the unexpected, I guess," Odadjian said Sunday from a tour stop in Columbus, Ohio. "If we do something common, it doesn't match us. People look at us differently. They look at us with one eye and say, 'Why are they doing that?'"

Fans haven't questioned the odd time signatures, sociopolitical lyrics and aggressive rhythm section. The first half of the set, "Mezmerize," was released May 17 and hit No. 1 on Billboard's album chart, selling over 1 Million of  copies. The set was produced by Rick Rubin and System of a Down guitarist Daron Malakian.

System of a Down gets bigger stage for its act
Interviews
Posted by ZAk on Monday, October 03, 2005 - 06:58 AM

Cheerfully idiosyncratic in an old-school, Frank Zappa way, System of a Down is an unlikely arena act. Nevertheless, in the decade since the progressive metal quartet formed at an Armenian Christian school in Los Angeles, it has become one of the most popular and outspokenly political groups in rock today.

Vocalist Serj Tankian, guitarist Daron Malakian, bassist Shavo Odadjian and drummer John Dolmayan released their eagerly anticipated fourth album, "Mezmerize," in May, after keeping fans waiting for more than four years after 2001's "Toxicity." Now, as the band prepares to release "Hypnotize," the second installment of its double album, on Nov. 22, it is touring with another equally strange and creative act, the Mars Volta.

I spoke with Tankian from his home in L.A. shortly before the start of the tour...

Accessing System's spiritual side
Interviews

Daron Malakian, the guitarist and principal songwriter for the dazzlingly versatile Armenian American heavy rock band System of a Down, is not a religious man.

But when Malakian, who will play at the Spectrum Friday (Aug. 26) along with his System band mates, Serj Tankian, Shavo Odadjian and John Dolmayan, talks about the creative outpouring that led to SOAD's two 2005 albums, Mezmerize (out now) and Hypnotize (due in November), he speaks in spiritual terms.

"The best way I can explain it is that I'm like a religious person who prays a lot," says Malakian, 30, who was born to parents who emigrated from Iraq to System's home base of Los Angeles. (The other band members were born in Armenia and Lebanon, but they all attended the same Armenian private school in L.A.)

SOADFans: Shavo and Daron Recall Rides That Were Limpin', Not Pimpin'
Interviews

System of a Down's Shavo Odadjian also had a nickname for his first car, a beat-up silver 1983 Ford Thunderbird. "It was called the 'Mean T-Bird' in high school because I had this, like, stereo system in there that would play metal the whole time, but it was just a broken down, beaten down car," said the bassist. "I bought it for $300. I had to retire it and I gave it to the Salvation Army. I took out the speakers and kept the big amplifier. That's what happened to the 'Mean T-Bird.' It was really tacky. We all had beaters."

System guitarist Daron Malakian's was "a white four-door 1987 Honda Accord that I took to the cemetery and crashed while — this sounds like a cheesy heavy metal story, but I crashed it listening to the song 'Black Sabbath' at the cemetery, because it was like a 15 mile-an-hour zone," he said. "I was doing like 65. I actually, maybe a couple of weeks ago, told my parents how that car got wrecked for the first time."

Malakian replaced the wrecked Accord with another Accord — which he drove equally as recklessly and also destroyed in a near-fatal wreck. "After I crashed all the Accords, I had to drive my mom's Buick Regal," he lamented. "It had a bad radiator, and every time we drove it, it made this dinging noise. So you would have to drive, like the whole time, with this noise going."
