UNITED MINDS, brief review, photos & videos
Posted by ZAk on Thursday, April 30, 2009 - 07:59 PM
"The music was ok, a few rappers, including the RZA, rapped over beats that Shavo was mixing. We heard about 100 happy birthdays to Shavo from everyone that walked onto stage.
Shavo played about 5 songs from the AchoZen album while chameleon conductor was setting up. it wasn't too bad.
Chameleon Conductor was good in my opinion. Shavo played a song with them. the surprise act was Snot.

One of the five songs played, the ones off the album (Shavo said it himself), is a cover of a song by Harout Pamboukjian, and another song was a really bass driven song. there is no rock-rap stuff on it from what we heard. It was interesting beats with people rapping over them.

Mini review & info by S.O.A.D.orV.O.A.D.

"The show was pretty off the hook!!! The special guest was Snot btw. Chameleon Conductor also mentioned that they will be taking out a CD soon in the upcoming months. Lasted until 2 AM after which there was an After party for Shavo's Birthday!!"

I love them musically, but I don't care for the vocals too much.

ur right...the vocals aren't so good

OH-NO-ITS-ROGER!!!

Shavo NEEDS System.

No bad...

I'm betting if it weren't for their ties to SOAD, nobody here would hear of them, though.

And the vocals are a little...off.

those who say the vocals are not that good, first should sit behind the drumkit, and try to play the drums and sing the lead at the same time! then you can comment.

^ I like vocals. :) Hah drummer of my father band also was a singer, but it's a liitle OT. :D

Sejana, that doesn't work when one of the people you're directing that at has already done that.

So, I guess that - by your rules - my comment isn't null and void, then.

I think it was great. It reminded me of System, sure not the same singing and no hidden mandolins and sitars. And no bipolar mood changes, but still, that was great.

Mandolins and sitars? Man it was just live performance. ;)

WHAT SHOW DID THIS "REVIEWER" GO TO??? Firstly, as the flier read, the theme for the event was Human Minds: it was the unification of people who endured and overcame crimes against humanity. The show, which was 2 days before April 24th commemorating the Armenian Genocide, started off with a very touching and informative video about the victims of The Armenian Genocide, the genocide in Darfur, political promises unfulfilled, and had footage about the endurances of different civilizations. I looked around and everyone was engaged in the message of the video. The footage kicked off the music , which was incredible! There were live performances by Money Mark and Mix Master Mike of the Beastie Boys (INSANE!!!!!) , along with powerful perfomances from Killa Priest of Wu Tang Clan, The Rza, Shavo, SNOT, unreleased music from ACHOZEN (SICK!) and Chameleon Conductor. I, along with the party of people I went with, were amazed that we were witnessing such incredible performances for only ten bucks a pop! We were all really into all of the performances, and none of it fell short of absolutely amazing. We all were pleasantly surprised with Chameleon Conductor, who ROCKED it for their first show. My friends and I at the show all discussed how this band is really going to blow up.

All in all, we had a really incredible night... it will be one I will always remember and cherish. Thanks for putting on such an amazing show for us! For those of you who missed it (physically, OR mentally- as some of the bonehead attendants above did), I feel sorry for you! IT ROCKED!!!!

United Minds- April 22, 2009 - The Key Club Review

Personally, I think that was the best show I went to for $10 in a long time….

The night started with George Clinton's grandson's band, God's Weapon. They were very heavy and experimental with a few different vocalists. It was pretty cool for metal-heads to get into.

Afterwards, the night took a different turn into the electro world with the duo Gadget Inspectors. They rocked the house with their unique blend of electronic sounds and instruments which got the Key Club movin’.

Right after their set, Shavo stepped on stage and talked about what “United Minds” represents. It was a night of celebrating the overcoming of all cultural struggles. They showed a video that was a collage of reports on the Armenian Genocide, the Darfur Genocide and a few others…it was very touching…

It was also Shavo’s birthday celebration so it was a show/party kind of night.

Next up was an impromptu performance feat. TACTICS (Shavo) and Money Mark (Beastie Boys). These guys really took me to the next level. TACTICS was spinning drum and bass grooves as Money Mark was doing some crazy sounds with different synths.

Money Mark stepped off the stage and Killah Priest joined TACTICS for the hip-hop set that showcased many rappers including Leggezin Fin (who is a rapper from Angola, Africa who performed two songs in Portuguese), Kinetic 9 (Killarmy) and Black Knights.

But the definite highlight of the hip-hop set was when RZA took the stage and performed Wu Tang classics. The crowd was really into it, the energy was off the roof….it was awesome when RZA started to pour Patron shots into the crowd’s cups.

Prior to the next act, we got to hear a few Achozen songs……it sounded cool and I cannot wait for the album!!

I did not know what to expect when Chameleon Conductor hit the stage, considering I had already seen electro/hip-hop/metal acts. These guys really shocked the audience. The drummer was the lead singer and that alone is something you don’t see every day. All their songs were different from one another and it felt too short. For the final song in the set, Shavo joined the band in a powerful ending to their set. They announced that they will be releasing a CD within a month, so I am looking forward to checking that out as well.

Following Chameleon Conductor, Shavo came on stage and threw Affliction shirts into the crowd as world-renowned DJ MIX MASTER MIKE of the Beastie Boys was setting up. He was phenomenal! I had never seen a DJ move and mix like that in my life. I did not even know that was possible.

Right after MIX MASTER MIKE was done, Shavo came on stage to introduce the surprise guests of the evening….Snot. A band that was up and coming with SOAD back in the day until the loss of their lead singer Lynn Strait. But they’re back with a new front man and they brought the house down with their heavy sound. The crowd went wild in the mosh pit; it was a perfect ending to the night.

Thank you and happy birthday to Shavo again for putting together an incredible night of music and knowledge.

Your welcome ZAK! Maybe my review should be on the front page as opposed to such a negative and blind review of the night! ;)

Also I spotted Greg Watermann at the event....cant wait to see his pics of the night!!!!!

^^ Ditto. Agreed. I'd expect to read a more accurate and detailed account of the show.... especially from a review featured on the front page.
