Quiet Riot Drummer Bites Back at System of a Down Drummer
In a recent interview with Drum! magazine,
System of a Down drummer John Dolmayan made the following comment:
"I learned the second mistake by not making it. Bands would live way outside
their means and squander whatever they made. Quiet Riot made $20,000,000 apiece,
and now they're playing 500-seat venue shows to survive. That's sad to me.
Surround yourself with the people that you grew up with that you trust. I
maintain my relationships with the people I knew before SOAD became the
juggernaut that it is."
Quiet Riot drummer Fankie Banali strikes back with the following response:
"Dear John,
Fascinating interview [click HERE to read
the interview]. While I think you are a excellent drummer in a wonderfully
popular band, know about what you speak of before doing so.
I personally never made $20,000,000 dollars as you wrote. Not even close, not
even a clean million. And we did indeed as a band spend and waste monies on
tours, production, recording, videos, etc., like any other band does. We also
signed a terrible record deal, but I accept that. And while I was comfortable
and enjoyed the initial success that Quiet Riot afforded me in much more humble
ways than you imagine, I did not squander my money as you claim, but instead
took care of my ailing mother who eventually succumbed to cancer which she
suffered from 1982 which predates my success with Quiet Riot until her death in
1990.
So that you may be enlightened, I to keep my relationship with family, and with
friends that I knew before the not so juggernaut that is Quiet Riot. I even keep
in touch on a regular basis with all the members in my first garage band when we
were still teens.
I may not have the popularity, success, or prestige that you now have with
"SOAD" but I certainly have values.
As to playing 500 seater clubs, sometimes less, sometimes more, and I appreciate
every single person that comes to see us. I wish you well and enjoy the success
your fans currently afford you while you have it.
I'll leave you with a favorite George Harrison song title: 'All Things Must
Pass'."

Umm, I don't know what spicymeatball is referring to but, I think you should know that this was actually quite polite, intelligent and well presented, considering that it is coming from an "80's Rocker. Most of the rock/Metal artists of that time were usually beligerent. Dearest John got off light...I can just imagine how the letter would have read had it been Axel Rose. This is also a good lesson to us all, including John, to never assume. yes, there were bands in the 80's, 90's and now that make millions but, not all and Quiet Riot certainly wasn't part of that. Speak Facts or do not speak at all.

John just got edcuated but it makes me wonder......why did the dood write to john just to say that? Yes john was assuming but he probably only said quiet riot because it was the first thing that came to mind or something. He was just making an example, he probably didn't necessarily mean them. Besides I'm sure john will go 'people take shit way to seriously....what ever dood' and move on with life/

wow, i thought his reply would be nasty and full of anger. but he ditched him in a kind way. i think that john wont reply because he doesn't have something to reply on but i would apologise if i was him. but maybe it would be a problem because he has his pride and you know how they say... sorry seems to be the hardest word

John didn't get owned. John was just using quiet riot as an example of how 80's rockers spent their money irrisponcibly. I'm sure he wasn't personally attacking Benali. You say that John's a dick for what he said, but he wasn't personally attacking Benali and remember that Benali only speaks for one man. He might not have spentt his money idiotically but that doesn't mean the rest of the band didn't. By the way-why would Benali find that so personal to him? I know his mother died and all but he was missing the point of what John was saying.
