There is no escaping the fact that System Of A Down are now, quite rightly, one of the biggest bands on the planet. And with 'Mesmerize', the first of their two stunning new albums already in the UK Top 10, youre guarenteed some pretty special nights out. See you down the front!
A lot of bands say it gets repetative playing the same venue. How do you feel about doing three nights at Brixton academy?
John Dolmayan (SOAD Drummer): "It would have been better if it was five nights, right?! It can be repetative, but whats the difference really if we play that venue three nights in a row or three different venues? We still have to put on a show with intensity and perform at our utmost. Obviously, we're gonna make every night special and we'll play certain songs on some nights that were not gonna be playing on other nights. Actually, those three shows might be more diverse than the other shows on the tour because we have to make sure we have different sets. A lot of the people are gonna come to repeat shows"
How many new songs will you be playing? John: "I'm not really sure, the new album is out, so theoretically we can play as amny as we want because we don't have to worry about them getting leaked. Its a dilemma because how many new songs do you play? A lot of kids wanna hear old songs, but youve gotta keep the balance. And were getting to the point now where we have to make those decisions. It was never a problem before because we only had so many songs to choose from, but now we have four or five albums worth of material. We could play those three shows at Brixton an not play the same songs twice! If you dont play some songs people are gonna get disappointed, but sometimes you really do have to mix things up"
Does it feel weird to be above Slipknot and Slayer on the Download festival? John: "It is kinda strange, but we have an understanding of how it works. Slayer are one of the greatest bands of all time and us playing after them is not gonna take away from that and its not gonna take away from our respect for them. There just happens to be a huge demand for our band right now and Slayer's more centralised to certain people. I mean, were on the radio so more people get to hear us. And as far as Slipknots concerned, we've gone back and forth with us playing after them, them playing after us. It doesnt really matter. All i know is its gonna be a crazy night. I think its gonna be a show people talk about for along time"
How do you get yourself psyched up for those big shows? John: "When you see that many people in the audience youre pretty psyched up! I mean 85,000 people at Donington! If it takes more than that to psyche you up then you must have an adrenaline problem. Or maybe youve seen too much and you should hang up your hat. How do you not get hyped by that?"
Don't your arms ache after hitting the drums so bloody hard for those long sets? John: "Not really. After the first day all of us look like old men, but its like working out, after a couple of shows your body gets used to the punishment. Oh wait, I should go for the sympathy vote... Yea i get really sore so I need constant attention after the shows!"

i think they should play more new songs like radio/video (seems to be a favorite on this site), this cocaine..., question--you know the really outstanding songs. also they should play some unreleased stuff cuz thats some of their best work! songs like marmalade, johnny, *definitely* Friik, and metro. maybe they should re-do and publish them on hypnotize as like hidden tracks.
